PPS Short Report and Intervention Guide
A new, free resource from CPA to support point prevalence surveillance
The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) is delighted to share our new Point Prevalence Surveillance of Antimicrobial Use: Short Report and Intervention Guide.
The Guide aims to support facilities conducting point prevalence surveillance (PPS), aiding them in interpreting their PPS report and suggesting relevant interventions to improve antimicrobial use. It is compatible with both the Global PPS and World Health Organisation methodologies, and includes:
- A summary guide of potential PPS findings and the corresponding opportunities for an antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) intervention
- Guidance on how to make the most of your PPS report, with suggested specific interventions based on the opportunities identified
- A matrix to assist with categorising AMS interventions to ensure they drive meaningful change

“With 35 million people predicted to die in the next 25 years as a result of drug-resistant infections, it is imperative that we take action to reduce their spread and safeguard antimicrobials for the future.
“Data is the starting point and key to understanding the problem, but turning that data into improving practice is a challenge.
“We hope that this guide gives a simple and accessible starting point to support any healthcare worker at any level of facility to undertake antimicrobial stewardship to improve how we use antimicrobials and work to safeguard these valuable medicines and reduce AMR.”

This Guide is being delivered as part of a pilot initiative in collaboration with several other project teams supported by the Fleming Fund:
and has been supported by CPA teams from our antimicrobial resistance (AMR) programmes:
