Seeing Beyond Diabetes: The Pharmacist’s Role in the Prevention, Screening, and Management of Diabetic Eye Conditions

Diabetes is a major global public health challenge and a leading cause of preventable visual impairment and blindness worldwide, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This session aims to strengthen pharmacists’ knowledge and confidence in recognising, managing, and supporting patients with diabetic eye complications. It will explore common ocular complications associated with diabetes, approaches to prevention and treatment, and the pharmacist’s role in patient counselling, screening support, and multidisciplinary care.
Guest Speaker: Dr Fabrizio D’Esposito
Head of Region, Western Pacific | International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness
Dr D’Esposito is the Western Pacific Head of Region at the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). He is a public health specialist with over 15 years’ experience across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific, working in advocacy, policy, programme design, and research.
His work has focused on noncommunicable diseases and eye health, including diabetic retinopathy. Dr D’Esposito previously led The Fred Hollows Foundation’s diabetic retinopathy research portfolio and supported the integration of screening and management into health systems in low- and middle-income countries, and before joining IAPB, he worked with the World Health Organisation’s Western Pacific Regional Office. Dr D’Esposito holds a PhD from the University of Sydney and a Master of Public Health from the University of Melbourne.
Guest Speaker:Â Dr Navin Kumar Loganadan
Clinical Pharmacist (Endocrine/Diabetes) | Hospital Putrajaya, Malaysia
Dr Loganadan is Head of the Specialist Clinic Pharmacy and Diabetes Medication Therapy Adherence Clinic Services at the Endocrine Institute, Putrajaya Hospital in Malaysia. He has 16 years’ experience as a diabetes clinical pharmacist within the Malaysia Ministry of Health and has played a leading role in developing pharmacist-led diabetes services, including medication adherence support, insulin dose optimisation, injection technique counselling, and hypoglycaemia management.
Dr Loganadan holds a PhD in pharmacogenomics of antidiabetic therapy and has presented his research at major international conferences, including the American Diabetes Association and International Diabetes Federation. He is also Chair of the Diabetes Clinical Pharmacy Subcommittee at the Malaysia Ministry of Health and an advisor to the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s Practice Transformation Programme for Diabetes.
Guest Speaker: Prof. Tunde Peto
Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology | Queens University Belfast
Prof. Peto is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at Queen’s University Belfast, Clinical Lead of the Northern Ireland Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme, and a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Medical Retina. She specialises in chronic blinding diseases, ophthalmic image analysis, epidemiology, and statistics, and is internationally recognised for her work in developing and managing diabetic retinopathy screening and training programmes.
Prof. Peto is also Head of the Belfast Ophthalmic Reading Centre and Director of the Central Administrative Research Facility, which supports the grading of ophthalmic images for clinical research studies.
She trained in Hungary and Australia and spent 15 years at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London before taking up her current role in Belfast.
