Meet the CwPAMS 2 Grantees
The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) and The Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) are delighted to announce 24 new grantees across eight African countries as part of the Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship (CwPAMS) 2 programme.
CwPAMS is funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care’s Fleming Fund. The Fleming Fund is a UK aid programme supporting up to 25 countries across Africa and Asia to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a leading public health threat across the world. The Fleming Fund invests in strengthening surveillance systems through a portfolio of country grants, regional grants and fellowships managed by Mott MacDonald, and global projects managed by partners.
CwPAMS 2 grantees are delivering projects focusing on:
- Improving antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), including surveillance
- Building antimicrobial pharmacy expertise and capacity
- Enhancing infection prevention and control (IPC)
- Improving the use of clinical microbiology and antimicrobial prescribing data to inform clinical decisions
- Enhancing the detection and reporting of substandard and falsified antimicrobial medicines;
- Supporting community pharmacy.
Grants will run from April 2023 through to December 2024 with projects carried out by both new and existing health partnerships between the UK, operating across Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
The following partnerships have been successful in receiving grants:
- Kakamega Cambridge Health Partnership – Kakamega County Centre of Excellence in Antimicrobial Stewardship
(Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Kakamega County General Teaching and Referral Hospital, Masinde Muliro of Science and Technology, School of Medicine) - Strengthening Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) through improving surveillance and building sustainable capacity and capability in LEKMA Hospital as a centre of excellence for possible roll out
(UK Faculty of Public Health (FPH) – Africa Special Interest Group (SIG), Ghana Public Health Association, Lekma Hospital) - Kampala Cambridge – Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Prevention Control
(Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Makerere University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Cambridge Global Health Partnerships) - Utilising the NHCT – Tanzania AMS network to strengthen AMS activity and introduce clinical pharmacy in Tanzanian healthcare organisations and communities
(Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre, North Tyneside General Hospital) - Malawi/Wales Pharmacy Antimicrobial Stewardship Project
(Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi) - Centre of Excellence on antimicrobial stewardship in Central Uganda
(Nottingham Trent University, Makerere University School of Public Health, Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust) - Strengthening Pharmacy Leadership for Antimicrobial Stewardship in Sierra Leone
(King’s Global Health Partnerships, Connaught Hospital) - Enhancing Capacities of Healthcare Professionals in the Volta Region of Ghana in the Practice of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Programmes: A Hub and Spoke Model
(University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho, Ho Teaching Hospital (HTH)) - Supporting the development of an antimicrobial stewardship network to share learning and build capacity in antimicrobial stewardship in Ghana

Bidirectional learning has allowed us to have conversations and ask questions like "why are these antibiotics being used?" Participation in CwPAMS has inspired us to make changes in the way we deliver education and training and quality improvement. The introduction of the concept of behaviour change, GESI and One Health has also benefited my organisation tremendously”
