CPA welcomes a new Commonwealth Secretary-General
As The Right Honourable Baroness Scotland leaves office, CPA welcomes the beginning of the term of the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association warmly welcomes Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, until recently Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, to the position of Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. Secretary-General Botchwey is the first African woman, the second woman overall and the first African national by birth in a quarter century to assume this office.
As an Accredited Organisation of the Commonwealth, CPA works closely with the Commonwealth Secretariat to support the advancement of the Commonwealth’s values and to ensure that Commonwealth pharmacy is represented in spaces like the Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting. The appointment of a new Secretary-General marks a new phase in our collaboration with the Secretariat.
“As we thank Her Excellency The Right Honourable Baroness Scotland for her leadership of the Commonwealth over the past 8 years, I am delighted on behalf of CPA to welcome Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to her new position as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. At this time of increasing uncertainty in global geopolitics in which the voices of lower-and-middle-income countries are crucial, we especially celebrate the fact she will be the Commonwealth’s first Secretary-General from Africa in 25 years, and welcome her experience as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs for almost a decade. We look forward to working with Secretary-General Botchwey in the months and years to come as an Accredited Organisation of the Commonwealth.”
