Commonwealth Pharmacists Day: A Message from CEO Victoria Rutter
Your Pharmacist, Your Partner in Health
Today, on the 16th June 2023, we commemorate an important day in our calendar – Commonwealth Pharmacists Day. A day set aside to acknowledge, appreciate, and applaud the vital role pharmacists play within our diverse healthcare ecosystems across the 56 countries of the Commonwealth.
Pharmacists are at the heart of our communities. We are medicine experts, trusted advisors, patient advocates, and knowledgeable educators. We contribute to the improvement of health outcomes, the reduction of health inequalities, and the advancement of public health. Our roles often extend well beyond the dispensary, reaching deep into the communities we serve, ensuring the wellbeing of individuals and families alike.
Over the challenges experienced at a global level over the past years, the world has witnessed first hand the resilience, dedication, and adaptability of pharmacists across the Commonwealth. Whether it’s providing continuation of care through the COVID-19 pandemic, responding to disasters and medicines shortages, taking up extended roles such as vaccination or improving access to essential medicines, pharmacists have been on the front lines, delivering care with unwavering commitment and tireless dedication.
Despite the many challenges, pharmacists have ensured that essential health services continue, and that our communities receive the care they need. They’ve embraced new roles, expanded their services, and adapted their practice to meet the unique and pressing needs of our time.
Pharmacists are often the first point of contact in the health system, and often the most accessible. They provide medication counseling, health screening, immunizations, and chronic disease management, and are increasingly being given prescribing powers to help facilitate the access to medicines and progression of universal health coverage. Their work goes a long way to improving health literacy, fostering adherence to medication, and ultimately enhancing patient outcomes.
Our Association, and by extension our Commonwealth, is enriched by the diversity of our pharmacists. From the bustling metropolises of Australia and Canada to the vibrant communities in Nigeria and India, each pharmacist brings unique perspectives and experiences, reflecting the breadth and depth of the Commonwealth. This diversity is our strength, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose as we collectively strive to enhance healthcare for all.
The recent pandemic has also highlighted that we live in a global world. We are global citizens and the digital world has broken down international boundaries; it has also become apparent that health is global – disease knows no boundaries. The Commonwealth network brings together pharmacists from all regions of the world – each with their own unique contributions to make and lessons to share. The importance of collaboration and unity among pharmacists across the Commonwealth in these times cannot be overstated.
As a profession, we are smaller in number than our medical and nursing colleagues, so it is imperative that we join together in order to magnify our voice. By working together, sharing knowledge, exchanging best practices and advocating for our essential role in patient care and delivering on the sustainable development goals, we can leverage our strengths, overcome many challenges, drive forward innovation, and raise the standard of pharmaceutical care across our nations – all for the benefits of the communities that we serve.
On this Commonwealth Pharmacists Day, and as we continue to navigate the changing healthcare landscape, it is imperative that we unite and support our pharmacists in their quest for knowledge, skills, and innovation. We must create an environment that empowers them, enhances their capabilities, and recognises their contributions.
I urge everyone to join me in expressing gratitude to our pharmacists across the Commonwealth for their service, especially during these challenging times. Let’s take a moment to celebrate their hard work, perseverance, and dedication to improving health outcomes in our communities. The future of our profession has never been brighter and our contributions to patient care have never been clearer.
To all our pharmacists, I say thank you. You are the fifth emergency service, the vanguards of our health, the stalwarts of our communities. You make the world a healthier place.
Happy Commonwealth Pharmacists Day!
